Happy Birthday! Inspiration for Celebrating Your Cat’s Birthday

It’s the most important day of the year—your cat’s birthday!

But do you know how you’re going to celebrate?

Our cats are our best friends, so it’s only right that we take some time on their special day to celebrate all of the joy they create. Whether you’re wanting to plan a huge party complete with guests or decide to opt for a chill day at home, you can find inspiration for your cat’s birthday below.

But first thing’s first…

How to Figure Out Your Cat’s Birthday

If your cat is a rescue (which is the best breed!), you may not know exactly what day of the year she was born. That’s okay! You can simply make an educated guess based on how old she was when you adopted her and backtrack from there. That’s what we’ve done with all of our cats!

Not sure how old your cat was when you two were brought together? Simply ask your vet what they think. Based on your kitty’s body and condition, they’ll be able to give you a good estimate to go off of.

Still unsure? Celebrate your cat’s Gotcha Day instead! This is the day you two first met, which can be just as meaningful.

Ways to Celebrate Your Cat’s Birthday

Planning a cat’s birthday is, in my opinion, one of the greatest joys in life. So go ahead and go all out.

Spend the Day with Her

If you’re anything like me, you already spend a lot of time with your cats. But you can still make their birthday special by making intentional time with them. Spend a few more minutes petting her in the morning. Sneak her some extra treats in the afternoon. Snuggle up together for a movie marathon (my cats LOVE musicals). This additional time and attention will mean the world to your cat.

Plan for Extra Playtime

There’s nothing most cats love more than playtime! On her birthday, set aside special playtime that you might otherwise overlook. Toss her favorite ball back and forth or even buy her a brand new feather wand as a birthday treat. Interactive toys will get her the most excited and give the two of you extra bonding time.

Stock Up on Her Favorite Treats

In our house, special occasions call for Juicy Bites! The girls go crazy for them, so we reserve them for special occasions like birthdays and holidays. Find a treat that your cat loves more than any other and make sure you have plenty to give her on her birthday. It’s a simple way to make the day special.

Organize a Party

If your cat is social and enjoys company, organize a birthday party for your other cat obsessed friends to attend. Decorate with pictures of your furbaby, balloons, and streamers—just make sure your cat is supervised around them and doesn’t get hurt! And don’t forget to “bake” the birthday cake for your cat with layers of their favorite wet food and treats.

If your cat is like mine and would rather hide from other people, that’s okay! You can still have a virtual party on Zoom or Instagram Live.

Don’t Forget the Purr-esents

What’s a birthday without a few presents? Along with new toys and treats, consider getting your kitty a new scratching post, bed, or window seat. This will keep the birthday fun going for weeks to come—or they’ll at least love the box their gift came in.

You can also choose to make a donation to your local animal shelter in your cat’s name. This way, their birthday can help pay forward some pawsitivity to other shelter cats.

Cat Lives Are Too Short, Make Each Year Count

I know all too well just how fast time flies with cats. It feels like just yesterday I adopted our current cats—and now they’re 5!

While it may seem silly to some, there’s no shame in celebrating your cat’s birthday every year. After all, she makes every day special.

So go all in. Make her a cake of her favorite food. Request the day off of work and spend it snuggling together. Take those pictures of her for Instagram (and share them with @pawsitivepurrpose so we can see!).

The memories you make now will last for many, many birthdays to come.

Tell your kitty happy birthday from me and my cats!
